World Cancer Day 2023: Putting Cancer Awareness in the Spotlight
World Cancer Day 2023: Putting Cancer Awareness in the Spotlight
World Cancer Day is an international awareness day observed on the 4th of February each year. It is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to raise worldwide attention and inspire action for a cancer-free world. 2023 marks the second year of the three-year “Close the Care Gap” campaign, which highlights that there is still more to do to address uneven access to cancer care in communities.
Since 2020, the Chugai group has participated in the World Cancer Day initiative. Our involvement in this movement is a natural extension of our mission to provide patient-centric healthcare. In support of World Cancer Day, we orchestrated a series of initiatives to raise awareness about cancer.
Beacon program to promote cancer patient advocacy
To promote further knowledge about the social issues surrounding oncology, we held a cancer awareness workshop for our employees.
Presented by the Singapore Cancer Society, the Beacon program aims to equip participants with the knowledge and resources to be cancer-informed advocates. B.E.A.C.O.N stands for Befriend, Educate, Advocate – Cancer Outreach Network.
The workshop was held on 16 February 2023 with 30 participants. By signing up, they pledge to become cancer-informed advocates. The workshop equipped participants with knowledge and skills in cancer care so they can be empowered to provide valuable support to individuals and families impacted by cancer.
Besides basic cancer knowledge and the treatment options for cancer, the trainers also shared the available resources for cancer patients and provided tips on how to communicate empathetically with cancer patients.
This initiative reinforces our commitment to promoting patient-centered care and improving outcomes for those affected by cancer.
Fundraising for cancer patients
As part of our commitment to corporate social responsibility and to give back to the community, we also organized a fund raising with dollar-for-dollar matching. The proceeds raised were donated to the Singapore Cancer Society which provides patient care services to needy cancer patients through its welfare, hospice home care, cancer treatment subsidy and rehabilitation support programs.
Relay run to support those impacted by cancer
Relay for Life is a global movement which rallies local communities to raise funds for those battling cancer. On 4 to 5 March 2023, our very own Team CPR participated in the 100km relay race.
The race involves participants from each team who took turns to pass the baton in a relay run to raise funds for cancer research and support. Consisting of 18 runners, Team CPR successfully ran a total distance of 114.8km in 11 hours and 57 minutes to complete the race.
We are proud of Team CPR’s participation in this meaningful cause to support cancer survivors and those affected by cancer.
